Miles City is the seat of Custer county. It was named after General Nelson Appleton Miles of the 7th Calvary. It is the largest city in Southeast Montana with a population of around 8500. Miles City is the economic hub of the region, ranchers bring their cattle from miles around to be bought and sold at the auction yard. The town offers plenty of shopping, a state of the art medical facility, a VA hospital, community college, plenty of parks, a kiddie pool, a natural oasis swimming pool, and a small lake for swimming, fishing and fun. Visitors and locals alike also enjoy the Range Riders Museum and the Custer County Art and Heritage Center.
Miles city is also the home of the “World Famous Bucking Horse Sale”. Always held on the third weekend in May. The event offers one night of bull riding, two days of bronc riding and horse racing, and a concert. There is large parade, food vendors and street dances downtown. The population of Miles City nearly doubles that weekend.
Custer county has a vast beauty all it’s own, prairies, rolling hills, breathtaking buttes with pine covered hills, and inspiring badlands. It is home to big game such as antelope, deer and elk. There is also plenty of good bird hunting.
Miles City has 3 public elementary schools, a private catholic elementary school, a junior high and high school. There is also a few small country schools in Custer County.
The Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers offer fishing, boating, and floating. People come from all around to hunt for agates along the banks of the Yellowstone.
